Soto Loses Chairmanship, Bauer-Chamberlain Elected as Replacement

Kien, Greater Hulstria- Socialist Party Chairman John Sato has been ousted and replaced by the Minister of Justice, Maggie Bauer-Chamberlain, after a vote of the party's general assembly. "I am honored that you have selected me as your new Chairman, and I will work my hardest to make you proud and to have this party win back the trust of Greater Hulstria," Bauer-Chamberlain said to the Assembly shortly after the results were confirmed.

The result was no surprise considering the unpopularity of Sato and the charisma and likability of Bauer-Chamberlain, the daughter of former-Chairman Ambrose Bauer. Sato has been facing increasing criticism over the past year following devastating results in the previous general election. The party lost 26 seats in the first election with Sato at its head, which, while similar to the 20 seat loss in 2797, reduced the party's influence in the Imperial Diet greatly. Although he managed to be reelected by a slim margin following that loss, pressure mounted over continued missteps and what appeared to be any lack of real strategy. Especially over the past five months, many senior party officials have blasted the Chairman due to his long absences from Thatcher House, one of which lasted nearly a month, and his unwillingness to give many interviews to the press. His lack of charisma also drew unfavorable comparisons to his predecessor, Ambrose Bauer, who is viewed still viewed as the face of the party even a year after his death. Eventually, the pressure got to be too much, and the party's Board of Selectmen voted 7-3 (with Bauer-Chamberlain abstaining in accordance with party rules) in favor of holding a mid-term vote of the general assembly, the first time the board had ever taken such a move. When the vote got under way, Bauer-Chamberlain entered in as the favorite, and proceeded to win in a landslide, winning 402 out of 501 votes the assembly, or 80.24% of the delegates.

Bauer-Chamberlain has been seen as the rising star of the SPGH since she first won election to the Diet in 2788. She has been increasingly in the spotlight in recent years due to the sudden resignation of her father due to cancer, her confirmation as Minister of Justice, and mounting speculation that she was to challenge Sato for the Chairmanship. A charismatic leader, she is viewed by many as her father's natural successor, unlike Sato, who was seen as having a cold personality and an unwillingness to compromise with other parties.

After her election, Bauer-Chamberlain also suprised the assembly by promising to step down as party leader after 10 years.

Bauer-Chamberlain is married to Albert Chamberlain, a senior official within the Fascist Authority Party and son of former FAP Chairman Erik Chamberlain. They were married in 2789, and have five children: Erik, Ambrose, Xavier, Charlotte, and Marie, and are expecting a sixth in the spring.

Ambrose Bauer Diagnosed with Cancer, Resigns Chairmanship

Kien, Greater Hulstria- Socialist Party Chairman Ambrose Bauer announced that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and shall hand his post over to Vice-Chairman John Sato by the end of the month, bringing an end to a twenty year reign over the party. "It is true that I have been diagnosed with cancer, and I will resign my post in the coming weeks," Bauer said at a press conference on the porch of Thatcher House, the party's headquarters. "I have been lucky enough to have lived for this long, to live a great life, to be loved by a wonderful family, and to work for the greatest nation on the planet. I had a good run. That's all I can really say. I had a good run."

Bauer's announcement has sent shockwaves through the Socialist Party, where Bauer has been an extremely popular and beloved leader for over twenty years, and through the Hulstrian political scene in general. "I cannot believe it," one party official at Thatcher House said today, fighting back tears. "I cannot imagine this party or this country without him. He has been such a great leader that I just cannot picture him not walking through that door every morning." Messages from politicians and ordinary citizens flooded into Thatcher House today, expressing sadness at the imminent loss of the party leader.

Born is 2741, Bauer grew up in a poor neighborhood of Kien, raised only by his mother after his father Alvin died in a factory accident. While his mother worked in a garment factory to support her young family, the young Bauer excelled in school, eventually moving onto the prestigious Imperial University of Kien, where he ranked at the top of his class. While there, he met his future wife, Heather Acton, whom he had three children with: William, Maggie, and Charlotte. He first entered the Imperial Diet in 2764 at the age of 24, pulling off a stunning upset over incumbent Joseph Oswald, and becoming the youngest member of the legislature in the body's seven-hundred year history. Five years later, he joined the newly reestablished Mormon Socialist Party, which was later rebranded the Socialist Party of Greater Hulstria, becoming its first member in the Diet. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party, becoming powerful enough to challenge the party leader, Margaret English, who was facing rising opposition after a disastrous outcome for the party in the election of 2776, poor handling of cabinet negotiations that led to an unequal coalition government with the Christliche Liberalen Allianz, and great tension between the SPGH and the Fascist Authority Party. Despite polls that predicted English would survive the challenge, Bauer pulled off a shocking victory to assume the leadership post. Immediately after winning the position, Bauer struck a deal with FAP Chairman Erik Chamberlain to form a unity cabinet, the first step towards a SPGH-FAP alliance and in what would be come a very deep friendship between the two men. The new chairman would prove to be a popular face for the party, moving the party from a low of 106 seats in 2776 to an all-time high of 229 seats. But Bauer was never able to win the Governor-Generalship due to the fact that he was never able to win over the more conservative, yet more densely populated, crownlands of Hilgar and Budenlar.

Bauer is said to have been given an extremely poor prognosis, with doctors reported to have estimated that he only has about six months left to live. No Bauer family members have publicly commented on the family patriarch's illness other than Bauer's daughter and parliamentarian from the Hulstrian Crownland, Maggie Bauer-Chamberlain, who simply asked that the media respect the family's privacy.

The ever-popular Bauer is to be succeeded by Vice-Chairman John Sato, who will be the first person of mixed Gao-Showan and Hulstrian blood to become party leader. Sato, while the two agree on almost every policy decision, is in sharp contrast to the ever-optimistic and playful Bauer, and has been described as cold and is well known to have a short temper. Nevertheless, the thirty-eight-year old vice-chairman has been recognized as a masterful politician, and has quickly moved up the ladder of the SPGH. But many within the party are known to have expressed dissatisfaction with him, including Maggie Bauer-Chamberlain, and, if the party were to suffer in the polls, he would surely face a serious challenge for the leadership.

Emperor Franz VI released a statement expressing his sadness at the situation facing his good friend, and who he said has been "a tireless defender of the people of Greater Hulstria." The Emperor also stated his intention to make Bauer a Freiherr (the hulstrian word for Baron), which shall result in his name being changed to Freiherr Ambrose Erik von Bauer.

Bauer Pleased by Luthori Compromise, Expresses Concern over Vorona

Picture
Kien, Greater Hulstria- Socialist Party Chairman Ambrose Bauer today expressed satisfaction with the passage of the Viceroy Compromise, an amendment to the Constitution of the Holy Luthori Empire, which is designed to reduce tensions between monarchist and republican forces within that nation. "I am glad that these two sides, despite their greatly different views, were able to come to an agreement," Bauer said to a large audience. "I can only hope that these groups can find some way to continue working together into the future for the people of Luthori."

Bauer, a devout royalist, has in recent months expressed his concern over the rise of various republican parties in Luthori and the rise in tension that accompanied them. The situation was reaching boiling point until the monarchists came up with the Viceroy Comprimise, which created the post of Imperial Viceroy of Luthori. The Viceroy is similar to the Governor-General of Greater Hulstria in that it is directly elected by the people and allows the Emperor to remain neutral in all political matters.

Bauer has been quite vocal in his desire for quick action by the Luthori government, but expressed outrage that Vizestaatsminister Alois Schlender, who is also the leader of the Christliche Liberalen Allianz, misrepresented his statements in order to score points with the public. "Mr. Schlender obviously is desperate for votes considering his party's poor performance in the previous two elections," Bauer said. "It is unfortunate that he has decided to deliberately misrepresent my words in order to win points with voters, especially when one considers the severity of the situtation. When I made my statement, I spoke of a need for the Luthori government to take swift action to prevent violence between the two sides. I advocated a peaceful resolution, which eventually came, and I said that if the rights of its citizens were infringed upon in any way that it would only exasperate the situation. Mr. Schlender did not mention any of this, but instead took a word or two from my statement and somehow managed to make it look like the Socialist Party advocated a military intervention by Greater Hulstria, something which could not be farther from the truth. For the Vizestaatsminister to act in such a reckless way brings shame not only to the office of Vizestaatsminister but also to Greater Hulstria."

Bauer later turned his attention to recent events in Vorona, where the government has been overthrown by communists. "I must admit I am very troubled by the recent events in Vorona. I urge the new government of Vorona to respect the inalienable rights of its citizens. But to completely cut of all communications, as other party leaders have advocated, would be foolish, counter-productive, and lead to more tension between our two nations." In recent days other party leaders have accused Bauer of giving support to the communist parties by not initially supporting Hulstria's withdrawal from the Hulstria-Vorona Security and Defense Agreement, something Bauer has flatly denied, noting that the Socialist Party later gave its support to the end of the defense agreement. "The simple fact is that we simply wished to hear the opinion of (Foreign Affairs) Minister Tanemoto before ending our alliance. Having heard the opinion of our most senior, respected and trusted diplomat, we gave our support to Hulstria's withdrawal from the agreement. Any suggestions to the contrary are just plain false. I would also like to thank Minister Tanemoto for his support and express my gratitude for all the hard work he has done on behalf of this nation."

Bauer, currently the longest serving party leader today, also addressed his party's chances in the upcoming election. "I have faith that the people of the Imperial Crownlands will choose truth over the deception of the CLA and parties like it, that they will choose the Socialist Party because we offer them the chance to improve their lives instead of holding them down, and that they will see that we offer true democracy."
